This is a fantastic book. Whether you are into sociology, travel or you are just talking with someone from a different part of your city, there are cultural differences that will destroy your ability to effectively communicate. Lanier points out these common differences based on global geographic regions. The application of this material will happen every time to talk to someone who is from a different communication culture. For me, since I am from out West and I have spent years in the military, the idea of indirect was enlightening. Just as Yankees are not really rude, and Southerners are not really liars, rather they are both communicating via their cultural grid. If you want to know how to communicate with others this is a really good book. It is also easy to read and pretty short. This is a fantastic overview of major issues and the large-scale choices that cultures (and subcultures) can make on those topics. Instead of trying to give (horribly inaccurate) tips for each nation that will rapidly become outdated, the author examines questions like, "How do a group of people view the start time of an event?" In the example of a wedding that starts at 2 o'clock, some cultures will understand that they need to have finished their preparations and be ready for the ceremony to begin at 2 o'clock. In other cultures, it's understood to mean that the guests and participants should begin to prepare at 2 o'clock and the ceremony will begin sometime hours after that. The author uses the rule of thumb that certain cultural rules are common in "hot-climate" cultures while others are usually found in "cold-climate" ones, but she asserts several times that this is a generalization that can be altered by urban/rural divides, age of the people you're interacting with, subculture/religion, etc., and should only really be used to help you figure out what your own cultural assumptions are so that you can consciously watch for differences and adapt your behavior to fit whatever the local rules are.
